In the early1800s, during the Victorian era the birth control movement started to evolve. There was a large amount of work done into convincing that birth control is a right for women and necessity. The methods, that the Victorian period had access to was the most common type of birth control back then was known as coitus interruptus.
Another commonly used method was condoms and sheaths. This expensive price made condoms only accessible to the middle class. Leaving the lower class without access to this control. But in the 1850s, vulcanized rubber was developed and the prices of condoms dropped. Sheaths were similar to condoms; however, they were thicker and tied with a string at the end. Douching was also used often. Women douched with various substances such as alum, quinine, lemon juice and baking soda. Two other methods of contraception were prolonged nursing and abstinence. This is how birth control was practiced in that era.
